Giro 2005 - Stage 14

22 May 2005

Another infinite stage today, truly an high-altitude marathon that caused some difficulties for more or less all the main GC riders at this Giro d' Italia.

The pace on the climbs was not exactly elevated (VAM=1450m/h on Stelvio), but the last 3 stages literally drained up the energy sources of all the riders, who took the course over very prudently.

Ivan Basso was not able to recover and today he really went through some real and useless suffering.

Let's hope that forcing himself to get to the finish of the stage would not be a terrible mistake: when one "scrapes the bottom of the barrel", the physical recovery can be very long, thus risking to compromise the preparation for the Tour de France.

Even Paolo Savoldelli went through a little crisis on the last little climb of the day: cramps and empty fuel tank with 10 km to go.
Danilo Di Luca gains 28" on him: if he had his team pulling to close the gap on Parra's & co. breakaway, he could've won the stage and taken the 20" bonus too...
