Higher Cadence in TT
DGW, United Kingdom 3 Aug 2012

Hi there,
What are you thoughts on the higher cadences now used in the TT? Up to more like 120 often. Know B.Wiggins after the Olympic TT said they studied F.Cancellara as he had raised the bar on TT performance and the main thing they (Wiggins) had noticed, and therefore had to change and work on, was 'cadence'. Therefore higher....what are your thoughts as previously this was considered "too high".
Thank you in advance.

As you know there is a linear relationship between ideal cadence and power (see article 53x12.com) : more power = higher cadence.
Wiggins and Froome at TdF and olimpics did not really push very high cadences : Wiggo in av around 100rpm , Froome around 90 rpm.
The best Cancellara utilized higher rpm (110-115 ) but sure pushed more watts.

Hi, tried to count cadance from the TV but must slightly overcalaculated. Thank you for the response and all the other great knowledge available on the website.

To measure rpm , I check the time of 10 pedal revolutions : the start of the timing is on pedal stroke 0 , than I count 10 revolutions and an the 10th I stop the chronometer.
Than 600/ time of 10 revolutions = rpm.
Es : if time 10revs = 5.85"
600/5.85 = 102.5 rpm

My way was not so simple (or effective) :) Perfect, thank you :)
