40% HC
marco, Canada 23 May 2003

Hi,

OK, ok, sorry for coming here to ask this question -- after all, I read the article on how so many factors can influence hematocrit levels that any one reading can't really tell too much. But I was recently tested due to suspected iron deficiency and was found to have a 40% level. Training volumes were high for 3 weeks some 10 days prior so elevated plasma probably contributed to that level, but my question is, does anyone here know if this is necessarily a bad reading? I'm eating a steak a day and supplementing with multivitamins, whey protein, vit. C and zinc just in case. Have a few big races coming up.

Thanks, marco

Not necessarily a HCT level of 40 means iron deficiency.

You should check your Ferritin, Iron and TiBC levels, instead...

Hi Stefano, thanks for the feedback. The 40% level turned up when I had the blood test to test for iron deficiency. The ferritin, etc. levels all returned OK, albeit on the lower side of "normal."

I was interested more in the implication of the 40% number . . . any thoughts? Thanks!
